Autumn

Autumn. Pumpkins, apples, hay rides. Leaves changing color and falling to the ground. The air becomes crisper, the nights become longer. We complete the harvest of what remains from Summer’s growing season. What isn’t reaped decays and returns to the soil, providing nourishment for what is to come in the next growing cycle. The death, or end, of something is a natural part of change. In the cycle of our seasons, Autumn is a reminder that all things fade away in time to make room for something new.

In Tarot, the Death card is rarely a sign of the literal death of the querent, as most people fear. Instead, it signifies organic change and transformation and serves as a reminder of what needs to happen for any change to occur. Before we can receive something new, whether it be a new experience, job, relationship, home, or anything else, we need to let go of what is leaving yet currently taking that space in our lives, in our hearts, in our minds.

We humans do not like change, so when this card crosses our path it can be stressful even when we know it is not about our literal death. The poignancy of Autumn’s role in the seasonal cycles reminds us it is ok to struggle and grieve endings. The Death card reminds us to move through those struggles and grieving, to let go of the fear, and to embrace the changes in order to receive the new experiences waiting for us.

Key Themes

Key Theme of the Death card: Change/Transformation

  • Remember the natural cycles of death and rebirth, endings and beginnings.
  • Change is the basis of manifestation. What no longer serves needs to end to make space for what we really want.
  • Overcome your fears of letting go, of the unfamiliar, of change.
  • Open yourself up to new possibilities.
